Two-way Video Conferencing for iPhone
August 12th, 2007 by glenin which we make the world’s first useful video phone
Update: Our demo won first place for Iron Coder Live this afternoon! Thanks for your votes everyone!
Update 2: We’ve added a link to source code at the bottom of the post. We also made a quick video demo in Starbucks today.
![]() |
This was a great excuse to buy another iPhone, install the iPhone toolchain and waste some time! Before we knew it, the iCal told us it was Thursday and we were putting the finishing touches on iPhone video conferencing.

Camera? Oh really?
Obviously we had to do something with the iPhone’s camera. Doing crazy things with cameras is a full time job for us! Our contest entry captures video from the iPhone’s camera, compresses it, and sends it to a web server, where it’s relayed to another iPhone, and vice-versa, resulting in a nice two-way video conference. Need audio too? That’s not our department but simply make a phone call to the other person’s iPhone and put them on speaker phone. Then fire up our program and you’re in business. (Yes, the iPhone makes phone calls apparently.)
Wait for the Clever Bit
Now you’re probably thinking, how do you do a video conference when the iPhone’s camera is pointed in the wrong direction? The iPhone, like every other smartphone that I’ve seen, has a camera mounted on the back of the device, causing most people to dismiss the possibility of video conferencing right out of the gate.
Phuckleberry
For those of you familiar with the Ecamm product line, you may remember that we sell the Huckleberry mirror, a periscope for your MacBook or MacBook Pro. While the Huckleberry II for MacBook Pro doesn’t quite fit properly on an iPhone, that’s nothing some wire cutters and imagination couldn’t fix. Here are some pictures of our homemade iPhone-Huckleberry-stand running a two-way video conference over wifi. As you can see, the camera image is reflected off two acrylic mirrors and re-oriented in software.

(The orientation changes automatically of course.)
Darn
Ok, whoops, we meant to create something useless and fun. Surprisingly, this actually works very well, and might be considered downright useful in some scenarios. I hope that doesn’t disqualify us from the hack contest…
The iPhone Toolchain
The first step after jailbreaking our iPhones (which sounds dangerous but is actually pretty benign), was downloading and building the iPhone toolchain. The toolchain is clearly the result of hundreds of hours of work by a devoted group of iPhone dev devotees. What have they built? In a Nutshell, devs can now write native iPhone apps in the same integrated development environment we use to write Mac apps, in the same programming lanaguage, using almost the same set of APIs. It’s pretty overwhelming to think of the possibilites this opens up. It’s like a tiny little Mac/phone just like we were all promised! Thanks to the folks at iPhone Dev Wiki, and the binutils project, and these two pages for getting us up and running within hours.
Source Code
We’ve decided to post the source code for our contest entry here on the blog. Please keep in mind, this is most likely not going to be useful to you for anything other than illustrating the mechanisms that we used to accomplish our hack. The current app does not support more than two users, and will not just compile and magically work, as you will also need a server and a relay script to send the imagery between iPhones. (We used Perl for that.)
Download here: squidge_source.zip (84K)
Sample App
Next on our list, we’ll be creating an app that will actually let ambitious iPhone users try out the proof of concept. This primarily involves adding a user interface. Check back for this.

I didn’t even realise the iPhone didn’t have video calling built in. The more I read about this phone the more features that have been standard for years I find out it’s missing….

Congratulations – this is a really smart piece of work.
August 12th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
That is awesome.
I think someone could make a special prism set enclosed instead of the “open” mirrors, but this is cool.
Is there a voice synch problem with this demo or does it match up OK?

Well the mirror thing is (pardon me) ridiculously lame (no matter how clever) but at least it’d be nice to have video recording software. (Please focus your efforts on just that and I’ll buy it)
I was thinking it was an early April Fools since if two iPhone users are chatting by video, how could either see the other person, but then I scrolled below the fold and say the mirrors…LOL.
*sigh* Yeah, cute, clever, inventive…but embarrassingly impractical. It makes the iPhone *seem* incredibly poorly designed and this is a gigantically awkward, Rube Goldeburg-esque workaround for it.

If I was designing the iPhone, I would have put a prism in front of the lense, and a slide on the phone that opens either a front-facing hole, or a back-facing hole. (In fact I would make it 3 position, with the middle position closing both aperatures for protection.)

awesome. this device is going to be an incredible platform. I hope apple can get their security concerns nailed down fast because the developer potential here is just too amazing.
and iphoner: its not lame at all. they solved a limited design. its not practical sure, but it is very very cool for sure.
and Dave: what phones do you know of that have video conferencing that look anything as good as this?
August 13th, 2007 at 1:49 am
Schweeeet. You guys get this nailed down and I can see a third-party opportunity for an iPhone case with a little sliding tray on the right hand side that puts the mirrors in the right place. Awesome job, guys.
As for the dude bitching about the mirror hack – clearly an utter tool. Feel lucky you get to see the sausage being made and don’t complain because it isn’t wrapped up in a pretty little Prada box.
And to the other poster…Dave I guess…I must be missing something, cause I googled for phones that can do videoconferencing available in the US, and I don’t see any. Can you point me to one? I’m curious how well they work, if they’re only over WiFi, additional cost for video calls, etc.

Guys,
every Nokia smartphone has two cameras: the better one at the backside for taking pictures and video, and a smaller one above the screen to make videocalls and take pictures/video of yourself while seeing the results.

i am a mac enthusiast. i love the positioning of the iPhone and the whole mac design approach. however, this is another example of how it lacks standard features. nokia N95 (and others) have had twin cameras for years now, also they have much higher spec camera, good camera effects and tools. these smart guys have built an impressive workaround to something that should be basic hygene for Apple… i am concerned about how the iPhone will perform in Europe where we clearly have higher expectations of our mobile hardware.

This development is fantastic! I think rather than designing an elaborate prism or mirror, somebody (ie: Apple) should develop a tiny BLUETOOTH webcam that could interface with the Iphone.

That’s what I was wondering, video conferencing is a standard cell phone feature? I’ve owned several cell phones and smart phone, most with camera’s built in, none with video conferencing and most didn’t even have video capture.
But hey, I’m willing to be wrong and in the dark here, I think it’d be a great feature, just haven’t seen it done yet.

roz, most phones in japan for the last three years now. kind of like the visual voice mail farce, this is not a new technology. americans have just been waiting on the phone companies to figure out how to properly bill us for such things.

Hey guys, this is a great accomplishment.
I am sure some of this code could be leveraged to allow the iPhone to record video rather than just take still pictures.
Does anyone have any idea if someone is working on this, or the effort it could take to actually encode video from the iPhone?

[...] Mac Daddy World is reporting that a group of coders have gotten together to develop this application and they’ve designed it to utilize the iPhone’s integrated WiFi connection instead of EDGE, because, as you know, the latter connection would be far too slow to keep up with the needs of a streaming video conference. I’m not really sure how they’ve managed to use the camera — which is mounted on the back of the iPhone — but I’d hate to think that the workaround involves just a bunch of mirrors. [...]

My LG-CU500 (Cingular/AT&T) has video conferencing with the build in swivel camera. Granted its only 1 way conferencing for now, but still very easy without any hardware add-ons required.
I really like this solution. I think the next gen. of Iphone will probably have an integrated solution.

I’m not a huge Apple fan but I have to admit that the iphone the coolest toy on the market today. Great post …makes me want to buy one. I have been in the Video Conference business from the beginning. HD Video Conferencing is the future and it look as though Apple will be leading the way.

It’s about 2 frames per second at this point. Can you point me to one? I’m curious how well they work, if they’re only over WiFi, additional cost for video calls, etc.

Guys… please make an executable for this code… you know… something that those of us can install using the installer from ziphone… also produce a stream lined mirror and I can tell you it will sell… after all if the executable is free but no good without the mirror of course people will buy… I’ll take 2 of them…
By the way… very cool stuff… keep it going…

Nice job guys

Not including a frontcamera on the “new” iPhone 3G, and enable some sort of iChat version for the iPhone, is really stupid of Apple. I wonder why they never give you enough features and settings to be happy. Pretty much all cellphones today, have not only a higher res backcamera, but also a frontcamera so you could use that for chat.
I guess we have to wait till 2009 or later.
Apple, you really need to beat all with more then just the design, ok?

Well now boys, if the new 3GS can do video without jailbreak…..
Could you redesign it to use a pair of small prisms that were built into a hard protective cover like “invisible shield”. One right against the lens and the other in the protective cover only millimeters away. Two tiny prisms = tiny periscope with no inversion.
I will be happy to test it for you

Guys, I’ve heard that you were using this approach to initialize camera view http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fcntt.tv%2Fnodes%2Fshow%2F492&sl=vi&tl=en&history_state0=
But according to my experience this one is not working any longer on 3.0. Is anything we can do with this? Tried to modified something, but not yet figure it out.
Help needed!
